Hot Oil Service Companies For 2014

Offshore drillers like Transocean (RIG), Seadrill (SDRL) and Noble (NE) have gotten pounded this year. Is it time to buy? Well, if not that, at least its time to become less bearish, say the folks at BMO Capital Markets, who upgraded the shares of Transocean, Seadrill, Diamond Offshore (DO), Ensco (ESV), Noble, Rowan (RDC) and Atwood Oceanics (ATW).

BMO Capital Markets’ Alan Laws and Peyton Mason explain why they see better times ahead of offshore-drilling stocks:

We are upgrading the offshore drillers to Market Perform from Underperform given what we view as a better risk/reward balance over next 6 to 12 months. We believe the stocks largely discount the weakness seen/expected in the industry in 2014/2015 with consensus estimates now reflecting the anticipated level of day rate reductions. Recent fixtures, while likely negotiated in 2013, suggest activity is resuming (albeit slowly), and we expect this to increase as ��learing house��rates are reached for producer cost containment. In other words, the potential for a surprise demand uptick now outweighs already price- in risks of further weakening, in our view. In our view, the largest risk to our upgrade today is being a bit early given what could be a longer drawn-out return to activity. That said we want to be positioned for the technical inflection like the land rigs in fall 2012. Stock downside appears limited with an already negative bias in expectations and ultimately investor fatigue with the thesis. Fundamental valuation metrics (PE and P/BV) also suggest trough levels. We think differentiation (vs. being viewed as one group) is likely to become more pronounced in a bounce, and we prefer ATW and ESV over peers. While other subsectors in Oil Services remain more attractive today, we believe value and contrarian investors should start kicking tires.

It also offers its customers various vehicle protection products, including extended service contracts, maintenance programs, guaranteed auto protection (GAP, this protection covers the shortfall between a customer�� loan balance and insurance payoff in the event of a casualty), tire and wheel protection, and theft protection products. The vehicle protection products that its stores offers to customers are underwritten and administered by independent third parties, including the vehicle manufacturers��and distributors��captive finance subsidiaries. The Company sells t! he produc! ts on a straight commission basis; however, it also participate in future underwriting profit for certain products pursuant to retrospective commission arrangements. Commissions that it receives from these third-party providers may be subject to chargeback, in full or in part, if products that it sells, such as extended service contracts, are cancelled. Its stores also provide a range of vehicle maintenance, repair, paint, and collision repair services, including warranty work that can be performed only at franchised dealerships and customer-pay service work. The Company has entered into framework agreements with vehicle manufacturers and distributors. DineEquity, Inc., incorporated on May 07, 1976, owns franchise and operate two restaurant concepts: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, (Applebee's), in the bar and grill segment of the casual dining category of the restaurant industry, and International House of Pancakes (IHOP), in the family dining category of the restaurant industry. As of December 31, 2012, the franchise operations segment consisted of 2,011 restaurants operated by Applebee's franchisees in the United States, one United States territory and 15 foreign countries and 1,569 restaurants operated by IHOP franchisees and area licensees in the United States, two United States territories and five foreign countries. As of December 31, 2012, the Company restaurant operations segment consisted of 23 Applebee's Company-operated restaurants, 10 IHOP Company-operated restaurants and two IHOP restaurants reacquired from franchisees and operated by IHOP on a temporary basis until refranchised. Financing operations revenue primarily consists of interest income from the financing of franchise fees and equipment leases, as well as sales of equipment associated with refranchised IHOP restaurants and a portion of franchise fees for restaurants taken back from franchisees not allocated to IHOP intellectual property. In October 2012, it completed the refranchising program and completed the transitioning to a 99% franchised restaurant system.

Applebee's

The Company develops, franchises and operates restaurants in the bar and grill segment of the casual dining category of the restaurant industry under the name Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. As of December 31, 2012, 68 franchise groups operated 2,011 of these restaurants and 23 restaurants were Company-operated. The restaurants were located in 49 states, one United States territory and 15 countries outside of the United States. During the year ended December 31, 2012, 20 domestic franchise restaurants opened, six domestic franchise restaurants closed. 154 Company-operated! restaurants were franchised. The number of restaurants held by an individual franchisee ranges from one to 438 restaurants. As of December 31, 2012, it is focusing on international franchising primarily in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Mediterranean/Middle East. As of December 31, 2012, there were 149 international Applebee's franchise restaurants. During 2012, 14 international franchise restaurants opened and 13 international franchise restaurants closed.

IHOP

The Company develops franchises and operates restaurants in the family dining category of the restaurant industry under the names IHOP and International House of Pancakes. As of December 31, 2012 there were a total of 1,581 IHOP restaurants of which 1,404 were subject to franchise agreements, 165 were subject to area license agreements, 10 were Company-operated restaurants and two restaurants were reacquired from franchisees and operated by IHOP on a temporary basis. The Company owns and operates 10 IHOP restaurants in the Cincinnati market area primarily to test new remodel programs, operating procedures, products, technology, cooking platforms and service models. IHOP restaurants are located in all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands and internationally in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates. As of December 31, 2012, the area licensee for the state of Florida and certain counties in Georgia operated or sub-franchised a total of 152 IHOP restaurants, and the area licensees for the province of British Columbia, Canada operated or sub-franchised a total of 13 IHOP restaurants. As of December 31, 2012, the Company had signed commitments and options from franchisees to build 245 IHOP restaurants over the next 17 years, comprised of 5 restaurants under single-restaurant or non-traditional development agreements, 120 restaurants under multi-restaurant development agreements and 63 restaurants! under in! ternational development agreements. As of December 31, 2012, there were 1,525 domestic IHOP franchise and area license restaurants. AmREIT, Inc. (AmREIT) is a full service, vertically integrated and self-administered real estate investment trust (REIT) that owns, operates, acquires and selectively develops and redevelops primarily neighborhood and community shopping centers located in high-traffic, densely populated, affluent areas with high barriers to entry. The Company seeks to own properties in cities in the United States that contain submarkets with characteristics comparable to its existing markets. The Company's shopping centers are anchored by national and local retailers, including supermarket chains, drug stores and other necessity-based retailers. The Company's tenant consists primarily of specialty retailers and local restaurants. The Company has acquired, owned and operated retail properties across 19 states. On December 12, 2012, the Company completed the acquisition of the Preston Royal Village Shopping Center, a retail shopping center, containing approximately 230,000 square feet of GLA. In June 2013, AmREIT Inc announced that it has completed the acquisition of Fountain Oaks Shopping Center, a 160,600 square foot Kroger-anchored shopping center in the north Buckhead submarket of Atlanta, Georgia. Effective September 24, 2013, AmREIT Inc, through its AmREIT Realty Investment Corp subsidiary, acquired Woodlake Square Shopping Center, an owner and operator of shopping centers.

The Company and its affiliates and predecessors acquired and developed mainly single-tenant retail properties across the United States, including in markets in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia. As of December 31, 2012, the Company's single tenant properties only comprised 9.6% of its total GLA and 8.1% of its annualized base rent. The Company's neighborhood and community shopping centers accounted for 90.4% of the Company's GLA and 91.9% of its annualized base rent as of December 31, 2012. The Company's single-tenant retail properties comprised 9.6% of the Company's GLA and 8.1% of its annualized base rent.

As of December 31, 2012, the Company's Advised Funds included four high net worth investment funds, one institutional joint venture with J.P. Morgan Investment Management, one institutional joint venture with AEW Capital and one joint venture wi! th two of! its high net worth investment funds, MIG III and MIG IV. As of December 31, 2012, the Company's Advised Funds held all or a portion of the ownership interests in 17 properties with approximately 2.2 million square feet of GLA.

The Company's real estate operating and development business focuses on acquiring, managing, leasing and providing development and redevelopment services for its wholly-owned properties as well as the properties held by its Advised Funds. By employing the Company's own real estate team, the Company is able to provide all services to its properties in-house and maintain secure relationships with its tenants. The Company's real estate operating and development business is held under the Company's taxable REIT subsidiary, ARIC. ARIC generates brokerage, leasing, construction management, development and property management fee income.

    Stage Stores (NYSE: SSI) was also up, gaining 13.47 percent to $22.41 after the company reported Q4 results and announced the sale of its Steele's off-price division to a new retail unit of Hilco Global.

    Sangamo Biosciences (NASDAQ: SGMO) shot up 16.32 percent to $22.81 announced the publication in the NEJM of the first-in-man study of genome editing using its ZFN technology. Shares of Agios Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AGIO) got a boost, shooting up 27.72 percent to $40.41 after the company reported quarterly results. BJ's (NASDAQ: BJRI) was also up, gaining 21.04 percent to $33.48 after the company was upgraded toa Buy rating at Buckingham research.
