Top 10 Electric Utility Companies To Invest In 2014

Biotech stocks are hot. Real hot. Smoking.

General stock-market weakness may weigh on the sector, however, which means investors should seek out the relative safety of large-cap biotechs, according to UBS.

REUTERS

Analysts Matthew Roden and Matthew Harrison explain:

Yesterday, the UBS Global Equity Strategy team downgraded the US to Neutral relative to Europe (which was upgraded to Overweight), highlighting near term headline risks that included potential fiscal drag into 2014 (secondary to budget and debt ceiling debates), potential changes to monetary policy, and geopolitical risks. However, our strategy team maintains a bullish view on equities in general. Under these conditions, we favor large cap biotech over smid biotechs, considering positioning in the S&P500 (still only 2%), a premium to the market that is on the lower bound of normal, and a solid catalyst path and growth outlook. In our view, potential market headline risks suggest the smid biotech group may see somewhat greater risk to performance (especially given relative outperformance YTD), although the solid fundamental markets outlook suggests this may be a buying opportunity looking into 2014…

Last week, HNI Corp. (HNI) beat earnings forecasts and promptly fell 3.4%. Raymond James, however, thinks the selloff was undeserved and raised its rating on the office-furniture maker, helping HNI Corp. to make back its loss.

Raymond James analysts Budd Bugatch andBobby Griffin explain why they upgraded HNI Corp.:

We are upgrading HNI to Outperform from a Market Perform rating and establishing a $36.00 price target following the company 1Q14 earnings release and management conference call. As stated in an earlier note, HNI delivered a lean1Q14 EPS beat; and we are puzzled by Thursday trading activity. HNI historically trades at a premium to the office furniture peer group, but following the sharesrecent pullback (down ~3.5% on Thursday before the Good Friday holiday and down 14% YTD compared to +0.8% for the SPX YTD), this is no longer the case and gives us reason for a more constructive rating.

Shares of HNI Corp. have gained 4.9% to $35.17 at 1:45 p.m., while Steelcase (SCS) has risen 0.8% to $16.93, Knoll (KNL) has advanced 2.5% to $18.74 and Herman Miller (MLHR) has ticked up 0.3% to $30.57.

Advisors' Opinion:

As we mentioned earlier, stock selection in the financial sector was the primary cause of our relative underperformance during the quarter. Two of the Fund's top five detractors, Genworth (GNW) and BancorpSouth Inc. (BXS) were in the financial sector. Genworth (GNW) declined over 24 percent and cost the Fund 38 basis points of performance during the quarter. The company announced a sizeable addition to reserves for purposes of covering potential loss exposure to long-term care insurance provided to its earliest customers. This was not an unknown risk to us as we did factor this into our thinking when we established our position. However, while the reserve build was in-line with our projections, it was still a negative surprise to the street. Our view with respect to long-term care is that States will allow for premium increases, sometimes sizeable, as GNW (and others providing this insurance) are last line defenses to patients who would otherwise likely end up in Medicaid and exacerbate state budget situations. Unfortunately, a mismatch in timing occurs as claims rise first, then reserves are lifted followed by a request for premium increases. Ultimately, we feel GNW is very cheap and is in a good position to seek premium relief even as the company continues to restructure its business in both long-term care and mortgage insurance.

  • [By Vera Yuan]

BancorpSouth (BXS) fell over 18 percent and cost the portfolio 31 basis points of performance. The company announced plans to delay several announced acquisitions as increased scrutiny by the Federal Reserve and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) concerning BSA/AML (Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering) is ongoing and the reviews will need to be completed before the acquisitions are allowed to proceed. This caused earnings reductions due to delayed deal accretion. We have seen this issue pop up at several other institutions and while it's unfortunate, we feel this is not a specific issue germane to only BXS but rather the result of increased scrutiny from Washington DC regulators concerned with money laundering. Management is complying with all policy and procedural change requests and hopes to have the matter resolved in the near future. From John Keeley (Trades, Portfolio) KEELEY All Cap Value Fund Q3 2014 Commentary. Also check out: John Keeley Undervalued Stocks John Keeley Top Growth Companies John Keeley High Yield stocks, and Stocks that John Keeley keeps buying Currently 0.00/512345

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Aaron Levitt]

One of the biggest winners could be Continental Resources (CLR). Already, the Bakken superstar, CLR has made the SCOOP its No. 1 focus in the upcoming few years. The firm has been snapping up acreage in the region and now sits on an impressive land holding of 330,000 net acres. The company plans on applying the same cost cutting and surgical-like drilling techniques that its uses in the Bakken into its new SCOOP acreage.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Overall, oil companies are getting much better at drilling the Bakken, which is really having an impact on returns. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) , which is the top driller and producer, was able to shave 73 days and $7.5 million off the costs of drilling six wells by moving to multi-pads. That's a 36% cycle time improvement, which is improving the company's returns when oil is over $100 from a 50% rate of return to an even better 60% rate of return.

  • [By Aimee Duffy]

    Production pop
North Dakota's oil production continues to climb, reaching an average of 793,250 barrels per day in April. That's about a 10,000 barrel-per-day jump over the March average, and a 33% pop over last year's number. Most of this production -- some 727,000 bpd -- is coming from the Bakken shale play. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) and Whiting Petroleum (NYSE: WLL  ) are the top two oil producers in the play right now.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

    Who's doing it the best?
It can be pretty handy to evaluate the entire industry on how efficiently it's replacing reserves, but reserve replacement costs can be more effective in evaluating individual companies. The lower the costs, the better it is. According to Ernst & Young, the most effective company at controlling reserve replacement costs is private companyAntero Resources, with a three-year average reserve replacement cost of about $2.88 per barrel of oil equivalent. Antero, and four of the other top five companies on Ernst & Young's list, are almost pure natural gas plays. If we've learned one thing over the past couple of years, it's that oil reserves and natural gas reserves are two totally different things when it comes to value. The five following companies have more than 50% liquids ontheirreserves and had the lowest reserve replacement costs for 2012.
