Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe] o contribute to sales growth.

Moreover, the company product launches throughout 2013 improved substantially, with Disguise new Halloween costumes, kidsfurniture, Tollytots infant and preschool products, Outdoor Engineer Sports products and Maui ToysImpulse line driving sales. The recent integration of technology and novelty in its product launches, via Dream Play and Technology Kid, has received positive responses from customers and I think this angle could provide the base for JAKKS's future profits. The firm international efforts are also impressive, and 2014 should be a prime year for profits in this segment, as the firm obtained rights for the Sofia doll line in Latin America, Australia, Taiwan and China, while Walt Disney Company (DIS) Princess doll sales remain strong in Europe.

    Valuation

With 2013 weak financial results in mind, it no surprise that JAKKS is focused on turning its losses around into profitability. Earnings per share posted a $2.43 loss for 2013, while the third quarter showed a $0.50 loss. And despite quarterly revenue growth of 3.1% year over year, due to improved sales in the Novelty, Role Playing and Seasonal toy segment, annual revenue declined by 5.0%, closing at $632 million. However, EPS has returned to an upward trend, and investors should expect 2014 to show profitability, with EPS ranging between $0.30 and $0.40. The company aggressive restructuring plan and cost saving initiatives, which include reduction in leased space, employees and overhead expenses, should help regain momentum throughout 2014, leading to growing revenue and margin expansion.

However, I must point out that 2013 restructuring plan also led to the suspension of JAKKS's quarterly dividend, making competitors like Hasbro Inc. (HAS) and Mattel Inc. (MAT) much more attractive investment options, given their consistent dividend increases. Nonetheless, I believe JAKKS has the potential to regain

Fidelity Partners With Morningstar, Goldman, CAIS to Bring Alts to Advisors

Fidelity Institutional announced Monday that it is leveraging relationships with Morningstar, Goldman Sachs and CAIS to bring a platform of alternative investments to advisors.

The new platform will provide access to products like hedge funds, private equity funds and ’40 Act mutual funds. It will also provide a list of alternative investment funds from third-party sponsors with reduced custody fees.

Through its relationship with Morningstar, Fidelity will provide advisors with research and education on alternative products. The education center will offer analyst insights on how to incorporate alternatives in a client’s portfolio and when is the best time to do so. Market research and trends are also available, as is a list of alternative mutual funds, generated by Morningstar Associates.

Goldman Sachs and CAIS will help offer products and due diligence. CAIS will provide access to hedge funds with reduced minimums, portfolio construction tools and an automated electronic subscription process. Due diligence and monitoring will be provided by Mercer.

Goldman Sachs will also offer access to hedge funds through portfolios of external hedge fund and private equity managers utilizing various alternatives strategies. It will also offer thought leadership on the platform.

Last year, CAIS launched what it calls the first global alternatives exchange, known as CAIS-X, which provides advisors with a platform for conducting due diligence, analysis and trading of alternative investments. The idea is that it will bring private vehicles into the public (advisor) space. With greater interest among advisors of alternatives in recent years, the value is readily apparent; something to which their 10% monthly growth can attest.

Earlier this year, CAIS announced the launch of its capital markets product offering, which includes access to IPO and follow-on offerings as well as structured products. Fidelity and CAIS will introduce the strategic alliance with a nationwide road show and CAIS will also sponsor Fidelity's upcoming 2014 Alternative Investment Forums.

“CAIS is very pleased to be selected as the hedge fund and private equity gateway to Fidelity's network of wealth management firms,” Matthew Brown, co-founder and CEO of CAIS, said in a statement. “CAIS will provide wealth management professionals the needed solution to meet client demand.”

“This platform was built on insights from our clients regarding the challenges they face incorporating alternative investments into their clients’ portfolios,” Mark Haggerty, head of Fidelity Institutional’s product group, said in a statement. “Delivering access to leading products was a priority, but we also invested in providing institutional-quality third-party due diligence, insights and education and a simplified and consistent pricing structure.”

As part of the education provided, Fidelity plans to conduct a series of alternative investment forums to keep advisors up to date on changes in the industry.

Fidelity will continue to offer aggregated reporting, custody, trading, clearing and execution services to advisors who use the platform, which will integrate with the WealthCentral and Streetscape platforms.

Hot Shipping Stocks To Own Right Now

SAN FRANCISCO A mysterious four-story barge floating near Treasure Island here has people wondering what Google is up to.

A local TV station and CNET offer two theories behind the contents of the boat, which is stacked with shipping containers.

CBS-affiliate KPIX, citing an unnamed source close to the project, says Google is constructing an Apple Store-like marketing center for Google Glass.

CNET says it might be a water-based data center, citing a patent filed by Google for such a thing in 2007.

Google had no comment.

A barge similar to the one in San Francisco is in the waters off Portland, Maine.

The search giant plans to have the barge towed to San Francisco's nearby Fort Mason, where it will be open to the public, the unnamed source told KPIX.

CNET, quoting an anonymous source identified as an independent marine engineer, says Google wants to build a backup data center in the event of a natural disaster. The barge in San Francisco would be one of a dozen data centers worldwide, the source said.

Stew Milne/AP Considering that it's largely a brick-and-mortar retailer in a world that's buying more goods online, PetSmart (PETM) has posted some very good fundamentals recently. Given that, it might be a tempting stock for an investor to own. But it's not going to be on the market much longer. Under pressure from some of the private equity firms that own big chunks of it, the company has solicited bids for a sale, which will end its time as a stand-alone, publicly traded entity. Its venture into private waters is the latest in a series of such deals so far this year. Here's a look at several other companies that took (or are taking) themselves off the market in 2014. CEC Entertainment Even during its time on the high-visibility New York Stock Exchange, CEC Entertainment was not a familiar name. But the company's key property, the Chuck E. Cheese chain of hyperactive-themed restaurants aimed at kids, has been a well-known brand for years. That might be why CEC Entertainment and financial adviser Goldman Sachs (GS) were able to find a wealthy buyer so quickly after announcing their intention to go private this past January. A mere week after that came to light, investment management firm Apollo Global Management (APO) offered $950 million plus roughly $370 million in debt assumption for the company. As that offer represented an amount 25 percent or so higher than the stock's most recent closing price, CEC Entertainment readily accepted, and the deal closed in February. The company is probably better off in Apollo's arms. Chuck E. Cheese's one-stop dining and entertainment model is looking a bit creaky next to the many options for fun available to 21st-century kids. At the time of the deal's announcement, the company's results were sagging, with sales and net profit both declining in recent periods. Going private -- well, semi-private, as Apollo is a publicly traded entity -- reduces the pressure for the company to return to growth right away, and give

You have probably never heard of 31 year old Scott Duncan. That's likely because he's not behind the latest tech wonder that everyone is talking about. That doesn't change the fact that he is worth $7 billion after inheriting a quarter of his father's share of boring energy pipeline business Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE: EPD  ) . That makes him the fourth youngest billionaire under 40 in America. In fact, if it wasn't for Facebook's (NASDAQ: FB  )  surging stock price, which is behind the wealth of Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Jan Koum, Scott just might have been the richest billionaire under 40 in America. It goes to show that being a tech geek isn't the only path to wealth these days.

But much of this newfound oil and gas production is taking place in regions that haven't been traditional producers of oil and gas. This has created strong demand for midstream providers to build the gathering systems, pipelines and storage tanks required to move oil and gas from fields in North Dakota and Pennsylvania to customers on the Gulf Coast and in the Northeast. This profited such midstream MLP giants as Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP), Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD), and Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE: PAA).
